Marlin 39a serial number dates.

I have searched this and other sites for the manufacturing date of my Marlin 39A rifle but am very frustrated. According to the charts my serial number indicates 1983, but that is impossible as I have been shooting this since before that time. here are the facts, and any help would be greatly...The early model 39 came out right after WWI in the early 1920's. I have a copy of the 2018 Marlin 'Classic American Rifles' catalog and page 20 shows two Marlin 39As, a Custom Model 39A and a Custom Model 39A Case Color, both it seems from the "custom shop". If the price is right, I'd jump in and collect what might be a rather unique/rare rifle.

The Model 39-A did not come out until 1939/1940. The 39-A's up to 1964 had a single letter prefix to the serial number, and up to 1968, had a two letter prefix to the serial number. We need that letter (s) prefix to fix the date of manufacture. Your first digit, the "8" may be the letter "B" or a deep stamped "P" or "R".

On the barrel, it say Marlin, Model 39A, NORTH HAVEN, CT (not the usual New Haven). The serial number on the tang, under the lever is 2164, no letter prefix or suffix.
